What is the corridor in Banke Bihari Temple?

In Vrindavan, the term “Corridor” refers to the Shri Banke Bihari Temple Corridor, a massive ₹262 crore redevelopment project designed to transform the congested area surrounding the historic temple into a world-class pilgrimage complex.

As of April 2026, the project has transitioned from legal battles to active execution. Following a landmark Supreme Court order in August 2025, a High-Powered Committee is currently overseeing the land acquisition and rehabilitation process.

1. What the Corridor Includes

The corridor is a 5-acre complex designed to replace the narrow, dangerous lanes (kunja galis) with spacious, organized infrastructure. Its key features include:

  • Expanded Footprint: The project involves acquiring land around the temple to create a massive open plaza capable of holding over 10,000 devotees at any given time.
  • Direct River Connectivity: A dedicated pathway will connect the Jugal Ghat (Yamuna Riverfront) directly to the temple. This allows pilgrims to take a holy dip and walk straight to darshan via a wide, unobstructed path.
  • Three Segregated Routes: To prevent “choke points,” the corridor features three distinct access routes—from Jugalghat, the Vidyapeeth intersection, and Jadoun parking.
  • Two-Floor Facility Complex: * Ground Floor: Will house over 11,000 square meters of public utilities, including waiting halls, medical rooms, cloakrooms, and shoe storage.
    • Lower Level: Designated for shops selling puja items and a gallery showcasing Krishna-themed artwork.

2. Why is it being built?

The primary driver for the corridor is pilgrim safety.

  • Stampede Prevention: Vrindavan now sees over 10 lakh visitors during festivals like Janmashtami and Holi. The ancient 3-meter wide lanes have led to numerous suffocation and stampede-like incidents.
  • Emergency Access: Currently, ambulances or fire trucks cannot reach the temple. The 7-meter wide pathways in the new corridor provide essential access for emergency services.
  • Modern Amenities: It provides basic facilities like clean drinking water, high-definition AI-enabled security surveillance, and baby care rooms, which were previously non-existent in the temple vicinity.

3. Current Status (April 2026)

The project is currently in the Land Transfer Phase.

  • Registry Milestone: In January 2026, the first property transfer deeds were officially registered. Members of the Goswami (priest) family have begun voluntarily handing over land in the Biharipura area in exchange for compensation.
  • Rehabilitation Policy: A “shop-for-shop” policy is in place. Traders displaced by the corridor are being allocated commercial spaces within the new complex or in developed zones like Rukmani Vihar.
  • Management: A Supreme Court-constituted committee, led by retired Justice Ashok Kumar, is managing the day-to-day affairs of the temple and the corridor project to ensure the temple’s spiritual autonomy remains intact.

4. The “Old vs. New” Experience

Advice for Visitors: While the corridor is under construction, expect some diversions in the Biharipura area. As of April 2026, new regulations also bar private security personnel from accompanying VIPs inside the temple to ensure a fair and “arbitrary-movement-free” darshan for common devotees.
